Since 2001, the U.S. Divisions of Health and Human Services (HHS), Forschungseinrichtungen for Condition Tax and Hindrance (CDC), National Inaugurate for Occupational Security and Health (NIOSH) has established benefit and design standards available respiratory shielding devices (RPDs) to protect against chemical, biological, radiological, and midmost (CBRN) hazards and toxic industrial chemicals. Prior to 2001, there were no setting for the use of RPDs by U.S. medical response personnel this masked an full range of expected CBRN threats. Federal regulations require emergency response personnel to use respirators approved by NIOSH for which expected hazards. Equipment performance reference were needs to sichern against CBRN threats. Neither industrial nor army air providing defense from all potential CBRN respiratory hazards. More federal agencies partnered to provide research and testing to produce the mandatory standards: Department of Justice (DOJ); Department of Home Security (DHS); Department of Defense (DoD), U.S. Horde Research, Development and Engineering Command (RDECOMa); Department of Commerce (DOC), National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST); and the Department of Labor (DOL), Occupational Safety furthermore Health Administration (OSHA).
